Salad Every Day? Is the TV Doctor Right?

Know what to eat with a customized, personalized nutrition profile.Have you heard of Dr. Mehmet Oz? He is a cardiac surgeon who has a daily TV talk show called The Dr. Oz Show. On his show, he focuses on a variety of health issues. Now, I like his show. He generally does a good job of informing people about health issues. But when it comes to his advice about nutrition – watch out!

Dr. Oz generally dispenses “one-size-fits-all” advice about nutrition, and we now know that “one-size-fits-all” advice does NOT fit everyone! So how can you tell if Dr. Oz’s advice, or indeed any nutrition advice, really fits you?

One way to know if a given piece of nutrition advice fits you is to try it out. However, this is where it gets tricky. Generally, you have to try the advice out for at least six months to know if it really works for you.

For example, on Dr. Oz’s show, one of his so-called experts suggested eating salad every day. So you would need to eat salad every day for about six months, and watch to see if it improves your health, helps you reach your target weight, and gives you better energy or digestion. If you do it for less than six months, you haven’t given it a fair test.

But the problem here is that you need to spend A LONG TIME trying out every single bit of diet advice you get. It can take years or decades to do this, and I know this for a fact, because I’m living proof. Before I understood how to customize my diet, I followed a lot of one-size-fits-all experts. I tried their diet advice for a number of months, and when it invariable didn’t work, I’d be on to the next expert and the next diet. I spent 40 years doing this, and I was no closer to finding the answer to my health problems than I was the day I started!

    Everything about this Real Metabolic typing makes so much sense to me and I really hope it will work for me.
    What I don´t understand is how come people/nutritionist and like, who read about this can continue to recommend “one size fits all” nutrition and supplements to people ??? The only one I have seen saying anything about it is Dr Mercola and he offers a free simplified test (and these simplified tests are, what I understood, not to be trusted?).
    And how can scientists perform studies without knowing the participants unique metabolic type and find out how the different types react ? Do they not believe in this and if so why? or is this a hidden knowledge ? It is not brand new this kind of extended “real” Metabolic typing is it ?

    Thank you Lena for your comments. I couldn’t agree more. In 300 years, there has never been one diet that has worked for everyone.

    Back in the 30′s, Dr. Weston A. Price traveled around the world studying the health and nutrition of 14 indigenous cultures living the way their ancestors lived. He found differences in the metabolic needs of all of these cultures. When they ate the foods of their ancestors, illness was rare and when they were sick, it was more from a viral or bacterial infection. They did not suffer from the degenerative diseases that we see in our society today.

    However, if they began eating the foods of a different culture, they started to have all of the degenerative conditions we see today such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, chronic fatigue, arthritis, etc.

    Since Dr. Price’s work, we have had 25 years of experience and research with metabolic typing. It’s been used by many thousands of people with success in reversing their symptoms and diseases.

    Of course, it was simpler back in the 1930′s. People didn’t move around as much then. But today, most of us are a mix of genetics from a variety of ancestors. Given this fact, it’s no wonder each of us needs a diet plan that is unique and individual, customized just for you as an individual.

    Hi Carole, and thank you very much for the history report. However that doesn´t really explain why nutritionists and scientists have decided to dismiss this “old” important knowledge. What are their reasons for disbelieve ? Have there ever been a debate between “nonbelievers” (nutritionists/scientists) and Metatyping-professionals that I can read about somewhere?

    Thank you for your comments, Lena. It really comes down to a difference in methodology. The problem with medical studies is that they look for consistency in reaction across a variety of patients, not individualized reactions. We are all about working with individuals, not categories.

    I don’t know of any debate like what you are asking, but debates like that would be pointless. It’s like arguing which is better, a hammer or a screwdriver. There are different tools for different jobs. The medical-based nutritional methodology works well for acute problems, while Metabolic Typing works better for chronic problems, like weight problems or internal systems problems, or for long-term health.
